A top US military official has described Iran as a rational actor in the international arena, stating that the Islamic Republic is not after producing nuclear weapons.

Speaking in a nationally televised interview with the CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS” show on Sunday, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey said, “We are of the opinion that Iran is a rational actor.”

Dempsey pointed out that US officials aren’t convinced Iran has decided to build atomic armaments.

“We also know, or we believe we know that Iran has not decided to make a nuclear weapon,” General Dempsey said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the top US general also described any Israeli attack on Iran as “destabilizing.”

I am glad he said these things. Though I am suspicious by nature, does this hint at a high level disagreement? After the Iraq lies of WMDs this is harder to sell to a war weary people, I know Britain will not get dragged into Iran, it would be political suicide for any government to do that. Also militarily impossible.
With Petraeus where he is, election year and Likud baying, it is hard to predict. One thing is for sure, any attack brings in Russia and China, not a place we want to be near.

I’ve often wondered how far the “real”
Military would let this go. It does seem to indicate, differences. We’ll have to keep an eye on this gentleman. See if he ends up like McChrystal.

Agree totally. You know, the “moral” amongst them, and there are many, will only put up with being pushed so far. I know there are serious rumblings of discontent in various British Messes at the thought of more war.
Goes back to honour and principle does it not? How far can you push a moral soldier before he says enough? My guess is they will find out soon.

The more I read and hear and learn, the more I come to realize that all of life is about, honour and principle, or the lack there of.

    • It is. We are known and remembered by our actions and deeds. That is honor and principle…if those actions and deeds are good and contribute. Sometimes being honorable means doing things that are not advantageous to ourselves.
